The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is sponsoring a petition to ask all presidential candidates to take a action against global warming (to-date they’ve gathered 62,000 signatures and counting!). Curious on where the candidates currently stand? LCV has also posted a Presidential Primaries Voting Guide with links to climate change statements from each of the presidential candidates. The Council on Foreign Relations offers The Candidates on Climate Change, with short statements from each candidate, as well as notes about the Senate committee assignments (Clinton, McCain, Obama) related to global warming and other environmental issues.
Today’s mitzvah: Check out your candidate’s position on environmental issues, and considering dropping them a line.
It’s Super Tuesday. A volunteer from My Candidate’s local headquarters called with an invite to watch the returns at local pub Brocach downtown tonight, but here in the Badger State we won’t get our own chance to vote until next month. This gives me extra time to badger everyone I know (no pun intended) to get registered — and to bother friends in other states to get out the polls today.
Today’s mitzvah: The democratic process doesn’t work without you. If your state has an election today: please vote. No primary today for you? Being home sick and spending the day on the couch, I’ve been watching the sad news of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination in Pakistan. Combined with Care2’s Daily Action reminder today to register to vote, this has me thinking a lot about the tremendous risks men and women in other countries take to participate in the democratic process.The U.S. presidential primaries begin soon (click here for Democratic schedule, here for GOP schedule). Yet 87 years and counting after American women gained a constitutional guarantee of the right to vote, only 65% of eligible American women voted in the last presidential election (although still beating the guys, who had a 62% turnout). Not registered? Not a problem: just click on Rock the Vote’s voter registration page, which will walk you through it quickly and easily. Alternately, the local League of Women Voters can provide information on registration (or just call or visit the local library).
